We conducted a blind taste test of five different waters. Each student ranked the five waters from Best Taste to Worst Taste. Most of the class predicted they would prefer Crystal Geyser water because that’s what they usually drink. Here is a summary of the results of our blind taste test.
Rating | Water | From Where | Hard or Soft |
---|---|---|---|
Best | Crystal Geyser | Sierra Nevada Mountains, California | Soft |
2nd | Evian | Cachat Springs, Evian, France | Hard |
3rd (Tie) |
Palo Alto Tap Water Black Mountain Distilled |
San Antonio and Calevaras reservoirs* Brea, California |
Hard Soft |
4th | Santa Fe Springs | Santa Fe, New Mexico | Hard |
This is the first year that water from our own room did not come in first! Palo Alto tap water normally comes from the Hetch Hetchy (Yosemite) water system. During the time of our taste test, the Hetch Hetchy water system was being worked on, so our water came from other reservoirs. It didn’t seem to matter if the water was hard or soft. Some people really liked Evian while others really disliked Santa Fe Springs.
*Note: Palo Alto tap water normally comes from the Hetch Hetchy (Yosemite) water system.

We were surprised how strongly people felt about Evian—they either loved it or hated it! Few people had Evian in the middle of their lists.
